An Internal Family Systems (IFS) Informed & Decolonizing Consultation Group for Asian American Therapists

Every person is a world to explore.
— Thich Nhat Hanh, How to Love

Background

Asian American therapists often bear collective burdens of white supremacy, cross-cultural concerns, and the mental health industrial complex. Too often, these contexts tell us to suppress our needs and personhood, ultimately robbing ourselves and our clients of our unique gifts, power, and capacity for connection.

This is a passion project inspired by my dissertation research on Asian American racial identity, psychology, and psychoanalysis; my clinical experience with 1.5 and 2nd generation Asian American women; my training as an Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapist; and my lived experience as a cishet 2nd generation Taiwanese American woman.

We will use Internal Family Systems (IFS)—an experiential therapeutic approach that assumes we all have wounded parts, protector parts, and an innate healing capacity—to liberate ourselves from collective burdens we have been forced to carry by white supremacy, racial capitalism, and the mental health industrial complex.

Topics will include, but are not limited to: microaggressions and the racism brigade; perfectionism, self-criticism, and shame; legacies of silence; sacrifice, gratitude, unsolicited debts & the American dream; the quest for legibility; hypersexualization, and welcoming grief, rage, & joy.
